Customary Capacity and Weight

In this topic, we learn to estimate, choose an appropriate unit for, and convert units of capacity and weight.

Topic: Choose an Appropriate Unit of Capacity

  • The U.S. customary units of capacity are: cup (c), fluid ounces (fl oz), pint (pt), quart (qt), or gallon (gal)

  • A fluid ounce is about the capacity of 2 tablespoons

  • A cup is about the capacity of a tea cup

  • A pint is about the capacity of a small milk carton; a quart is about the capacity of a milk bottle

  • A gallon is about the capacity of a big oil can

Topic: Choose an Appropriate Unit of Weight

  • The units of weight in the U.S. Customary systems are ounces, pounds, and tons

  • 16 oz = 1 lb; 2000 lb = 1 ton

  • A marker weighs about 1 ounce (oz); a telephone weighs about 1 pound (lb); a small car weighs about 1 ton (T)

  • The unit ounce can describe an amount of fluid as well as amount of weight

Topic: Convert Customary Units of Capacity

  • The U.S. customary units of capacity are fluid ounces (fl oz), cup (c), pint (pt), quart (qt) and gallon (gal)

  • 1 cup (c) = 8 fluid ounces (fl oz); 1 pint (pt) = 2 c = 16 fl oz

  • 1 quart (qt) = 4 c = 32 fl oz; 1 gallon (gal) = 4 qt = 128 fl oz

  • To convert a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply the larger unit with conversion factor

  • To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the smaller unit by the conversion factor

Topic: Convert Customary Units of Weight

  • The U.S. Customary units of weight are pound (lb), ounces (oz), Tons (T)

  • 1 pound = 16 ounces; 1 ton = 2000 pounds

  • An ounce is the unit of weight and a fluid ounce is a unit of capacity

  • To convert a larger unit of weight to s smaller unit, multiply the larger unit with the conversion factor

  • To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the smaller unit by the conversion factor
