Proportions

In this topic, we will learn to write and solve proportions.

Topic: Missing Term for Equivalent Ratios

  • A proportion indicates that the two ratios are equivalent or equal to each other.

    E.g. if a : b and c : d are in proportion, then
      a = c
      b    d

  • Each quantity in a proportion is called a term or proportion

  • If two ratios are proportional, then their cross products should be equal, that is
    a x d = c x b

  • To find any missing term use cross multiplication

Topic: Are Ratios in Proportion?

  • A proportion indicates that the two ratios are equivalent or equal to each other.
    E.g. if a : b and c : d are in proportion, then
      a = c
      b    d

  • To identify whether the terms are proportional or not, check if there cross product is equal that is,

    Is a x b = c x d ?

  • If a x d = c x b, then the terms are proportional

Topic: Establish Proportion for Missing Term

  • A proportion indicates that the two ratios are equivalent or equal to each other.
    E.g. if a : b and c : d are in proportion, then
      a = c
      b    d

  • If two ratios are proportional, then their cross products should be equal, that is
    a x d = c x b

  • The missing term can be found using the cross multiplication
