Slope and Rate of Change

This topic introduces the concept of ratios to determine the slope of a line and to recognize constant and variable rates of change.

Topic: Identify Slope of the Line

  • The slope of a line is a measure of its steepness and is the ratio of rise to run.

    Slope = rise / run

  • Rise is the number of units we move up or down. Rise is positive if we move up and is negative if we move down

  • Run is the number of units we move right or left. Run is positive if we move right and run is negative if we move left

  • If a line rises from left to right, its slope is positive. If a line falls from left to right, its slope is negative

Topic: Graph Lines with Slope, Point

  • Steps to follow to graph a line:

    Step 1: Mark the point (-3, 2) on the graph

    Step 2: Find the other point with the help of the slope

    Step 3: Join the two points

Topic: Rates of Change in Graphs

  • Constant rate of change means constant slope

  • Only a straight line has a constant slope
