Combinations and Permutations

This topic covers the concept of finding and distinguishing between permutations and combinations. Permutations can also be found by using different tools such as factorials and the Fundamental Counting Principle.

Topic: Combinations

  • A combination is a grouping of things or events in which the order does not matter

  • One possible way to find all possible combinations is to make a table

  • Another possible way to find all possible combinations is to make a tree diagram

Topic: Permutations

  • An arrangement of objects or events in which the order is important is called a permutation

  • You can use a list to find the number of permutations of a group of objects

  • You can also use the Fundamental Counting Principle to find the number of permutations

  • If n things need to be ordered, they can be ordered in n! ways

  • The factorial of a number is the product of all the whole numbers, except zero, from the number down to 1
