Customary Units of Length

In this topic, we will learn to understand and select the appropriate customary units of length. We will also learn to convert the customary units of length.

Topic: Appropriate Units for Estimating Length

  • The customary system of measurement is used to estimate the various measurements of length, weight and capacity

  • An inch can be used to measure objects that are a few times the width of a thumb

  • A feet is a good measure of objects that are a few times the distance between the elbow and the wrist

  • A yard can be used to measure objects that are a few times the width of a classroom door

  • A mile is a good measure of objects that are a few times the distance between 10 city blocks

Topic: Conversion and Comparison of Units of Length

  • To compare the various measures, convert all the measurements to a common unit

  • The various conversion factors are:

    1 foot = 12 inch

    1 yard = 36 inches

    1 yard = 3 feet

    1 mile = 5,280 feet

    1 mile = 1,760 yards

Topic: Arithmetic with Units of Measure

  • To perform addition or subtraction with two different units of measurements, the measurements should be in the same unit. If not, convert them to a common unit

  • The various conversion factors are:

    1 foot = 12 inches
    1 yard = 36 inches
    1 yard = 3 feet
    1 mile = 5,280 feet
    1 mile = 1,760 yards

  • When dividing, if the units of measurements are different, the units will not reduce. They remain in the fractional form

Topic: Estimating Length to Half, Fourth or Eighth of an inch

  • An inch is divided into 8 parts, the smallest division being 1/8 inches

  • Identify the divisions that are closest to the end point of the object

  • The length of a line is estimated as the value of the point to which it is closest
