Area of Triangles and Trapezoids

In this topic, we will learn about computing the area of a triangle, and how the formula for computation is derived from parallelograms. This topic will also cover the area of trapezoids using the properties of triangles.

Topic: Area of a Triangle

  • Any parallelogram can be divided into two congruent triangles. The area of each triangle is half of the area of the parallelogram

  • Area of a parallelogram = Base x Height

  • Area of a triangle = 1/2 x Base x Height

Topic: Word Problems on Area

  • Area of a triangle = 1/2 x Base x Height

Topic: Area of a Trapezoid

  • Area of a trapezoid = 1/2 x Height x (Base1 + Base2)
    Or, A = 1/2 x h x (b1 + b2)

  • A trapezoid can be divided into a rectangle and two triangles. The area of the trapezoid is the sum of the areas of the rectangle and the triangles
