Area of Rectangular Figures

In this topic, we learn to calculate the areas of rectangles and complex figures, and solve the related word problems.

Topic: Area of Rectangles

  • The area of a figure is a measure of the size of the region enclosed by the figure

  • Area of a rectangle = l x w   where l is length and w is width

  • Area of a square with side s = s x s

  • Area of a rectangle is the number of unit squares enclosed within the rectangle when it is placed on a grid of unit squares

  • Area is measured in square units. For example: square inches (inches2), square feet (ft2), etc

Topic: Area of Complex Figures

  • A complex figure is a shape made up of two or more shapes

  • One way to calculate the area of complex figures is to think of it in simpler parts. Add the areas of the simpler parts to find the area of the complex figure

  • Area of a Rectangle = Length x Width; Area of a square = Side x Side

  • Area is measured in square units
