Basic Geometric Ideas

This topic deals with describing and naming geometric figures. It also covers classifying polygons and naming them.

Topic: Identifying Figures

  • A point marks an exact location in space

  • A ray is a part of a line that has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction

  • A line is an endless straight path. It has no endpoints

  • A line segment is part of a line between two endpoints and it has a definite length

Topic: Identifying and Naming Polygons

  • A polygon is a closed figure made up of line segments that do not cross each other

  • The point where two sides meet is called a vertex

  • In a regular polygon, all the sides have equal lengths and all the angles have equal measures
