Congruence

In this topic, we will learn to use properties of congruent figures to solve problems.

Topic: Write Congruence Statements (Naming of Congruency)

  • Two figures that have the same shape and size are said to be congruent

  • If two triangles are congruent, all of their corresponding sides and angles are congruent

  • In a congruence statement, the vertices in the second polygon have to be written in order of correspondence with the first polygon

  • A correspondence is a way of matching up two sets of objects

  • We can start from any vertex to write the congruence statement

Topic: Congruence Relationships and Corresponding Parts

  • If two polygons are congruent, all their corresponding sides and angles are congruent

  • Use the congruence statement to identify corresponding sides

  • In a congruence statement, the vertices for each polygon are written in order of correspondence with the other polygon

  • For example, if a figure ABC ≅ DEF, then side AB = DE, BC = EF and so on. Similarly,

    ∠A = ∠D, ∠B = ∠E and so on
