Parts of a Whole and Group

This topic deals with the understanding and calculation of fraction of a whole set, fraction of a group, and fraction of a set.

Topic: Parts of a Whole

  • A Fraction is represented as (Numerator) / (Denominator)

  • Fraction to show the shaded part is defined as (number of shaded parts / total number of equal parts)

Topic: Parts of a Group

  • Fraction = Numerator / Denominator

  • For example, if there are 3  red balls and 2 blue balls then fraction of red color balls is 3/5 where 3(number of red balls) is the numerator and 5(total number of balls of all colors) is the denominator

Topic: Fraction of a Set

  • To find a/b of c, where a, b, and c can be any variable, we need  to find a x (1/b of c). For example if we need to find 2/3 of 15 then 2/3 of 15 = 2 x (1/3) of 15

  • 1/b of c is (1/b) x c. For example if we need to find 1/3 of 15 then 1/3 of 15 =
    (1/3) x 15
