LCM and LCD

In this topic, we learn how to find the least common multiple (LCM) and the least common denominator (LCD).

Topic: Least Common Multiple

  • The least common multiple or LCM of two (or more) numbers is the smallest number that is a multiple of both (or all) numbers

  • To find the LCM of two numbers, list the multiples of both the numbers

  • Compare the common multiples to find the least common number in both lists

  • The smallest common number in the list is the LCM

Topic: Least Common Denominator

  • The Least Common Denominator (or LCD) is the LCM of the denominators of a pair of fractions

  • The LCD can be the product of two denominators. Sometimes the LCD is less than that product

  • LCM of two numbers is the smallest number that is a multiple of both numbers

  • For equivalent fractions, we multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number
