Estimate Quotients

In this topic, we learn to estimate quotients using compatible numbers.

Topic: Estimate Quotients

  • When the problem does not require an exact answer, we use estimation

  • To estimate a quotient, we find compatible numbers. Quotient is the answer to a division problem

  • To estimate the quotient of 348 ÷ 9, use division facts to find a compatible number so that we can solve the problem mentally

  • 270 and 9 are compatible numbers because they are easy to divide mentally. Similarly, 360 and 9 are compatible numbers

  • 270 ÷ 9 = 30 and 360 ÷ 9 = 40. 348 is closer to 360 than 270. So, the better estimate of 348 ÷ 9 is 40

Topic: Estimate Greater Quotient

  • To estimate the quotient, use compatible numbers. Compatible numbers are close to the numbers in a problem and are easy to divide mentally

  • For example, 352 ÷ 40
    36 ÷ 4 = 9 so, 360 ÷ 40 = 9
352 is close to 360. 360 and 40 are compatible numbers because they are easy to divide mentally
    The estimated quotient of 352 ÷ 40 is 9
