Divide by 1-Digit Numbers

In this topic, we learn to divide 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. We also learn to divide using the partial division method.

Topic: Divide by 1-Digit Numbers

  • The number being divided is called the dividend, the number by which it is being divided is called the divisor and the result of the division is called the quotient

  • A number remaining after division is called the remainder

  • To divide 444 ÷ 3, we place the first digit in the hundreds place

  • 4 ÷ 3 = 1 R1. Bring down the 4 in the tens place

  • 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R2. Bring the digit in the ones place down and divide

Topic: Partial Quotients Method

  • The partial quotients method takes several steps to find the quotient

  • Think of multiplication facts of the divisor and use them to estimate the partial quotient

  • Think how many of the divisors are there in the dividend

  • Repeat the question until the number we get after subtraction is smaller than the divisor
