Multiplication of Decimals

This topic covers multiplication of decimals by integers and decimals. Multiplication of decimals by 10 and power of 10 are also covered.

Topic: Multiplication by Ten or Power

  • When a decimal is multiplied by the power of 10, the product is obtained simply by shifting the decimal point to the right by as many places as there are zeros in the   power of 10 (that is, 100, 1000, 10000 and so on)

  • 1) When a decimal  is multiplied by 10, the product is obtained simply by shifting the decimal point to the right by as many places as there are zeros in 10

Topic: Multiplication by Integers

  • To multiply a decimal by an integer:

  • Multiply them like positive integers

  • Then count the number of digits to the right of the decimal point and insert the decimal point in the product after the same number of digits counted from right to left

  • When both the signs of the given terms are different, the product will be negative

  • When both the signs of the given terms are negative, the product will be positive

Topic: Multiplication by a Decimal

  • To multiply a decimal by a decimal:

    Multiply them like whole numbers

  • Then count the number of digits to the right of each decimal point, add the count, and insert the decimal point in the product after the same number of digits counted from right to left

  • The product of two numbers having the same signs is positive

  • The product of two numbers having opposite signs is negative
