Division of Decimals

This topic covers division of decimals by integers and decimals. Multi-step problems are also covered.

Topic: Dividing Decimals by Integers

  • 1) To divide a decimal by 10 or a power of 10, shift the decimal point to the left by as many places as there are zeros in the divisor (that is, 10 or a power of 10).

    For e.g.: 34.5/10 = 3.45.

We know that the number of zeros in 10 is 1 so, on dividing by 10, the decimal point is shifted to the left by one place

  • 2) To divide a decimal by positive or negative integers, we will follow the following steps:

Step 1: Perform the division by considering the dividend a whole number and ignoring the negative sign of both the dividend and of the divisor

Step 2: Place the decimal point in the quotient when the division of whole number part of decimal is complete

  • 3) When both the signs of the given terms are different, the quotient will be negative

  • 4) When both the signs of the given terms are same (either positive or negative), the quotient will be positive

Topic: Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal

  • To divide a decimal by another decimal,

Step 1: Convert the divisor into a whole- number by multiplying the dividend and the divisor by a suitable power of 10 that converts the divisor into a whole number

Step 2: Divide the new dividend by the new whole number divisor obtained above.

Topic: Multi-step problems

  • Follow the order of operations while solving multi-step problems

  • According to the order of operations we  perform the division (÷) first and then addition (+)
