Equations and their Solutions

In this topic we will check for values of the variable that satisfies the equation. We will also learn to form algebraic equations and identify the best suited situation for an equation.

Topic: Solution of an Equation

  • To determine whether a given value of a variable is the solution of an equation:
    a) Substitute the given value of the variable in the equation.
    b) Then check if it satisfies the equation

  • A variable is a symbol usually a letter like x, y, z, etc. which used to represent a number.
    For e.g.:
    x + 2 = 3
    In this equation x is a variable and represents number 1 since 1 + 2 = 3

Topic: Forming Correct Equations

  • First, form an equation relevant to the given solution

  • Substitute the unknown quantity with the options one by one to check if it satisfies the equation

  • The quantity that satisfies the equation will be the required answer

Topic: Best Suited Situations

  • Form equations for both the given situations

  • Compare the two equations formed with the one given in the question

  • The equation that matches with the given one in the question is the correct situation
