Least Common Multiple (LCM)

In this topic, we learn to find the least common multiple (LCM) of a group of numbers by listing factors and using prime factorization.

Topic: LCM - Listing Factors

  • LCM can be obtained by making a list of multiples as follows:

    a) List the multiples of the given numbers

    b) Write the common multiples of the numbers

    c) The smallest common multiple is the least common multiple

    For e.g.: 2 and 4.
    Multiples of 2 = 2, 4, 6, 8
    Multiples of 4 = 4, 8

The least common multiple is 4

Topic: LCM - Prime Factorization

  • LCM  can be obtained by using prime factors as follows:

    a) Write the prime factorization of the given numbers

    b) Collect the largest number of occurrences of each prime factor

    c) Multiply each prime factor the greatest number of times it appears in any one factorization
